Christmas candy is a tradition in many households and the Christmas candy ball made with Oreo cookies and cream cheese is a new favorite.

Cooler weather and falling leaves starts many creative candy cooks planning their holiday treats. Candy balls have been a favorite of many Christmas confectioners to give as gifts and to have on hand for guests to enjoy during the holiday season. Christmas candy balls can be rum balls, peanut butter balls or buckeyes as some people call them, or a new favorite Oreo balls.

This recipe for Oreo balls can be made with traditional Oreos, Mint Oreos or Peanut Butter Filled Oreos with variations in the coating as desired. These make a great gift for neighbors and office workers or left out on Christmas Eve with a glass of milk for Santa to enjoy. The number of Christmas balls the recipe makes depends on the size of the balls made.

Candy Christmas Balls

Ingredients

  • 1 package of Oreos, flavor of choice (Mint Oreos, traditional Oreos, Peanut Butter Filled Oreos)
  • 1 8-oz. package of cream cheese, softened ( can use low fat for less calories)
  • Chocolate Almond Bark
  • Vanilla Almond Bark
  • Crushed Nuts, if desired for coating
  • Crushed peppermint candies, if desired for coating
  • Red Food Coloring
  • Peppermint Flavoring

Preparation

  1. Crush the Oreos using a blender for best consistency.
  2. Pour the Oreo crumbs into a bowl and add the softened cream cheese.
  3. Mix well with a hand mixer.
  4. Refrigerate for an hour before rolling into small balls.
  5. Place balls back in refrigerator for an hour.
  6. Melt almond bark and dip each ball in using a toothpick.
  7. Place on wax paper and allow to harden.

Variations

Peanut Coating: Roll Peanut Butter Oreo balls in crushed nuts immediately after dipping in chocolate.

Peppermint Twist: Crush starlight peppermint candies using a rolling pin and Ziploc bag. Dip the Mint Oreo Balls in vanilla almond bark then dip bottom half in crushed peppermint.

Candy Cane Stripes: Dip Mint Oreo balls in vanilla almond bark. Allow to dry. Add peppermint flavoring and a small amount of red food coloring to melted almond bark, pour into a zip lock bag or icing bag. If using zip lock bag, snip corner and use as in icing bag to add red stripes to the balls.

Oreo balls are a hit with everyone. Package them in candy boxes available at most local discount store or in candy tins also available at the local candy store. When making for a gathering, place on a platter with paper doilies underneath and use whole Oreo cookies for decoration. Be sure to make enough extra for the family if the Oreo gifts are expected to make it out of the kitchen.
